Saints of March

March is a great month for some great saints so before the month gets away from us, we'd like to introduce them to you via the CFP Holy Angels Gift Shop.

First, Saint Patrick, whose memorial is March 17 and whom we all know and love--the great Bishop of Ireland who brought the Catholic faith to the Emerald Isle. Taken to Ireland as a slave when young, he could have turned his back on the Irish people but, instead, was freed from slavery, seemingly miraculously, only to return to convert his captors. He was known to go throughout Ireland with a bevy of builders and would convert a town, build a church, ordain a priest for the new parish, and move on. What a way to evangelize!

Who can forget Saint Joseph, foster Dad to Jesus, the first man to see the face of God! His feast day March 19 is a Solemnity in the Church, and rightly so. This is the man who cared for Jesus in His youth. Can you imagine Joseph cuddling the Infant Christ, hearing him coo, helping him walk, teaching him how to plane a board, instructing him in prayer? What a joy Joseph must have had in his son and in his wife the Blessed Mother!

The great Father of Western Monasticism, Saint Benedict, is commemorated on March 21. Benedict was responsible for giving the Church the Rule that bears his name and for establishing monasteries that have held the faith secure for all the centuries since sixth century which was blessed by his life. The medal of Saint Benedict carries with it great promises if it is used with faith.

On March 25 the Church celebrates the Annunciation and Incarnation of Jesus in the womb of the greatest of all saints, the Blessed Mother who, by her yes, welcomed Jesus in the flesh into our world. All of Mary's life was a yes to God. What other saint can claim that?

Growing in Humility

There's a truism that, if you think you are humble, you aren't.

A few years ago, I saw a young woman wearing a t-shirt that read, "It's not about YOU." That statement is a call to humility.

The Lord calls us to grow in humility, the virtue that helps us recognize that it's not about us--it's about others and about God. We recognize our value as children of God and only because of that relationship. We recognize that every other human being is equally valuable for also equally being a child of God. Humility keeps us in our place, from thinking too much about ourselves and not enough about others. Unless we are saints already, we can probably all use some practice in growing in humility.

Lent is coming up quickly. This season is a good time to jump start your faith, and what better ways than by prayer, alsmgiving, works or mercy, and spiritual reading? Roman Franciscan Breviary Covers for One and Four Volume Breviaries--Donations Sought

BREVIARY COVERS FOR BREVIARY AND FRANCISCAN SUPPLEMENT OR OTHER PRAYER BOOK: The CFP Holy Angels Gift Shop can have manufactured breviary covers that will hold both the 1 volume breviary and each of the four volumes of the four volume breviary and the Franciscan Supplement in one cover. Or, if you don't use a supplement but would want to put in another small prayer book, that would work, too. These can be seen on this link in the CFP Holy Angels Gift Shop. The breviary covers will sell for 9.95 each and you can get them for Christian Prayer (1 volume breviary) and for all four volumes of the four volume Liturgy of the Hours. You can place your order now. The covers will be ready in April, 2014. 

FRIARS REQUESTED BREVIARY COVERS: Father David Engo of the Franciscan Brothers Minor asked if we might be able to donate breviary covers to the friars for their four volume Liturgy of the Hours. That would be 100 covers (for 25 friars). The CFP does not have the money to pay for that, but maybe some of you would like to donate one or more covers to the friars. If so, we will write, inside of the cover where the friar will see it, "Please pray for  __(Name)__" We will put any name you wish there so the friars could pray for your children, relatives, friends, spouses, etc. 

If you wish to donate the cost of one or more breviary covers, please go to the link and order as many breviary covers as you would like to order. Put your address into the billing section and the friars' address into the shipping section (Franciscan Brothers Minor, 2637 Schele Avenue, Fort Wayne IN 46803). ON THE SECOND LINE OF THE SHIPPING ADDRESS, THAT ASKS FOR THE LAST NAME OF THE PERSON TO SHIP TO, PUT THE NAME OF THE PERSON YOU WANT THE FRIAR WHO RECEIVES THE COVER TO PRAY FOR. IF YOU HAVE SEVERAL NAMES BECAUSE YOU ARE ORDERING SEVERAL COVERS, USE THE LAST NAME LINE AND THE COMPANY LINE TO PUT IN ALL THE NAMES.
